Tog Rating

Tog ratings measure the thermal resistance or insulation properties of flooring materials, including carpets and vinyl. The higher the Tog rating, the better the material’s ability to retain heat, which contributes to a warmer floor and increased comfort, especially during colder months. Here’s an overview of typical Tog ratings for both carpet and vinyl:

Carpet Tog Ratings:

1. Low Tog Rating (≤ 0.6 Tog):
These carpets have minimal insulation and are generally thinner, making them more suitable for warmer climates or areas where insulation is not a priority. Often used in offices or spaces that don’t need much warmth.

2. Medium Tog Rating (0.6–1.0 Tog):
These carpets offer a moderate level of thermal insulation. They provide some warmth, making them ideal for areas like living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways where comfort and moderate insulation are desired without being too thick.

3. High Tog Rating (1.0–2.5 Tog):
Carpets with higher Tog ratings provide excellent warmth and insulation, making them perfect for colder climates or areas that require extra comfort, such as bedrooms, lounges, or rooms with underfloor heating. The thicker the carpet, the higher the Tog rating, contributing to a cosy feel.

4. Very High Tog Rating (≥ 2.5 Tog):
These are typically luxurious, thick carpets offering superior thermal insulation. Suitable for areas that experience cold weather or for use with underfloor heating. These carpets trap heat well but may not be ideal for spaces with underfloor heating, as they can hinder the efficiency of the system.

Vinyl Tog Ratings:

1. Low Tog Rating (≤ 0.4 Tog):
Vinyl flooring generally has a low Tog rating, especially in thinner options. These are suitable for warmer climates or rooms that don't need significant thermal insulation.

2. Medium Tog Rating (0.4–0.6 Tog):
Vinyl floors with a medium Tog rating offer a bit more warmth but are still not as insulating as carpet. These are common in standard residential areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms, where practicality and ease of maintenance are key.

3. High Tog Rating (0.6–1.0 Tog):
Thicker vinyl floors, or those designed with enhanced insulation, can have higher Tog ratings, making them more suitable for colder environments or rooms where warmth is needed. Often found in areas where vinyl is paired with underfloor heating systems for added comfort.

Important Note: When choosing between carpet and vinyl, remember that carpet generally provides much better insulation due to its thicker pile, while vinyl offers less thermal resistance but may still provide a degree of comfort, especially in colder areas when combined with underfloor heating.
